As the company has grown, we strived to maintain as open and transparent a culture as Databricks had in its early days.. Giving employees regular access to our CEO and co-founders and hearing directly about our vision and priorities helps Bricksters to feel a connection between our larger corporate goals and their daily work. We strive to foster a culture of transparency as pioneers rooted in building the new standard of open source AI models and AI democratization, and our leadership in the industry mirrors our internal commitment to collaborative and transparent work.
Databricks’ culture principles were derived from a study of the behaviors that have led to high-impact work at the company. These values have a direct impact on company culture and play a large part in connecting teams across the organization. We believe in being customer obsessed, are truth-seeking, operate from First Principles, have a bias for action, and always put the company first. Our co-founders are fully involved in day-to-day operations including business and technical reviews, working alongside our team members to ensure that we are always aligned with our values.
Databricks’ CEO and Co-founder Ali Ghodsi believes strongly in the power of open source to democratize new technologies and empower Bricksters to have the resources needed to drive innovation and creativity. His leadership is rooted in truth-seeking and First Principles thinking, two of Databricks’ core values that stay true to our origins in academia. He champions the importance of data and reason to question biases and inform the decisions that will build the future of data and AI. Ali remains hands-on with research and development and his transparency and accessibility are core to the open and collaborative culture of Databricks.
At Databricks, we believe that diversity in backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and skills is crucial for innovating and fostering a sense of community. To create an inclusive workplace, we have seven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that offer support for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, and allies. Since 2019, we have increased the percentage of employees who identify with historically excluded race, ethnicity, and gender groups. We use annual culture and pulse surveys, as well as all-hands Q&As, to encourage employee engagement and accountability. This enables employees to provide feedback and ask questions, helping us keep on track with our goals.
Databricks is committed to providing employees (referred to as “Bricksters”) with the best possible experience. We heavily invest in tooling, community-building efforts, and workspaces to foster collaboration and ensure that we all work together harmoniously. We prioritize a collaboration-first hybrid work approach that gives employees flexibility alongside in-person opportunities like annual company-wide kickoffs, weekly CEO all hands with happy hours, and monthly team budget for team-building and morale events. Additionally, we emphasize transparency and trust across all levels of employees, with executive-level support and engagement across communication channels like Slack, as well as executive sponsorship of DEI programming and ERGs.
In addition to unlimited PTO, family planning, caregiving, mental wellness benefits, and fitness reimbursement, Databricks offers all full-time employees reimbursements of up to $1,000 each fiscal year to support their own career development through activities like courses, conferences, books, antiracism and racial equity training, and more. Databricks also gives our employees the opportunity to acknowledge, celebrate, and reward the outstanding impact of their peers through social recognition, personal notes, and cash bonus awards. Databricks is also proud to be one of the first six organizations certified by Fair Pay Workplace as part of our efforts to achieve pay parity.
