Why Ignite Reading IS A MOST LOVED WORKPLACE®

Systemic Collaboration

EMPLOYEES COLLABORATE THROUGHOUT OUR COMPANY BY …

“We are collaborative” is one of our company’s core values! We share knowledge, keep an open mind, practice humility and are inclusive. In our day-to-day work, this looks like cross-functional teams collaborating to launch our tutoring programs at new districts, team members in all departments testing new methods to continuously improve our program, and joining together to orchestrate retreats and celebrations for hitting milestones.

Positive Vision of the Future

EMPLOYEES AT OUR COMPANY HAVE A POSITIVE VISION FOR THE FUTURE BECAUSE …

Employees share Ignite Reading’s vision of an America where every child learns to read by the end of first grade. They maintain a positive vision for the future because not only do they see incredible student outcomes from their hard work, but they also feel deeply supported. Consistently, our reports show increasing numbers of students learning to read as a result of employees’ work and students gaining a newfound confidence when they learn to read. Employees also see their ideas incorporated into how we build our business, and the Senior Leadership Team receives employee feedback with gratitude, curiosity, and action.

Company Respect

WE SHOW RESPECT AND ENSURE THAT ALL VOICES ARE HEARD AND IDEAS ARE VALUED THROUGHOUT THE COMPANY BY …

Creating safe spaces for people to share feedback and acting upon feedback is one way we show respect and ensure that all voices across the company are heard. In addition to soliciting feedback through employee engagement surveys two times per year,, we ask employees to weigh in on company habits, strategy, and priorities.. One of our company core values is “We are courageous,” which encourages all team members to speak truth to power with grace.

Company Support / Killer Outcomes

WE SUPPORT OUR EMPLOYEES IN ACHIEVING THEIR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL GOALS BY …

We offer employees opportunities to try new cross-functional work, we ask what they want for their careers, and we provide feedback on their development. For example, we asked staff to discuss their strengths with a member of the People Operations team and document what they would like their impact to be in the future.. These conversations set employees up for meaningful career conversations and action planning with their managers.By working frequently in cross-functional teams, employees get to see projects from different perspectives, learn from one another, and see how different strengths can come together to move work forward.

Alignment of Values

OUR COMPANY’S VALUES ARE ALIGNED WITH OUR EMPLOYEES BECAUSE …

Our employees helped to craft our company values! At our first ever all-staff retreat, staff surfaced themes and words that captured how we work together, serve students and tutors, and engage with our partners. From that experience, the Senior Leadership Team iterated on the language, brought it back to the team, and allowed everyone to weigh in on the final language. Our core values are aligned to our people because they are from our people.

Company Practices / Love

PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES WE GIVE TO OUR EMPLOYEES THAT CREATE A LOVED WORKPLACE ARE …

Our weekly All-Staff Meeting is a key practice that contributes significantly to company culture. Meetings start with a song chosen by a staff member, which is followed by a small group break out time where team members discuss answers to a fun question to get to know each other. We always include a recognition portion of the meeting where anyone can celebrate the contributions of someone on the team. Often, so many people want to share a celebration that we have to extend the time! We close weekly meetings with an impact story where someone shares a meaningful work experience that exemplified our mission and our core values. These practices give us an opportunity to learn about those we work with, celebrate others, and elevate the impact we are all making.

CEO Strengths

OUR CEO SERVES AS A MODEL OF OUR COMPANY VALUES BY …

Our CEO consistently prioritizes students outcomes—whether our students are learning to read—above profit. She role models vulnerability which pushes us to reflect and have open and honest discussions. When making decisions about curriculum, staff or tutor experience, and partnership with schools, Jess grounds the conversation in how we can serve the most students in the most impactful way. Jess empowers every Ignite Reading staff member to continuously improve every facet of our work, even if that means trying something new. She speaks about the importance of work-life balance. Because our CEO started her career as a teacher and literacy specialist, she “walks the walk” and leads from a place of deep understanding about how we can best serve schools and students to get kids reading on time by the end of first grade. She is inspiring.
