One of NerdWallet’s core values is sharing and receiving open, candid and constructive feedback. Living this value requires constant collaboration, which we encourage through publishing and sharing our Collaboration Tenets. These six tenets provide Nerds clear, actionable standards for collaboration to promote productivity and unlock future opportunities. Our regular Hackathon brings together Nerds from different teams to brainstorm and execute ideas that benefit our users or NerdWallet. Nerds also have the opportunity to utilize Connect, a program that randomly pairs Nerds and invites them to connect.
NerdWallet’s vision is a world where everyone makes financial decisions with confidence. We bring that vision to life through The Financial Equality Project, a social impact initiative supporting credit unions serving low income communities. We also provide the opportunity for Nerds to give back. Our employee donation matching program matches donations up to $1,000 per year per Nerd, we provide Nerds with designated volunteer time off and host Nerd Pay It Forward, an annual all-company volunteer day. These programs give every Nerd the opportunity to impact their communities and feel fulfilled and optimistic about the future.
One of the ways we ensure Nerd voices are heard is through NerdVoice, a semi-annual employee engagement survey. NerdVoice gives every Nerd the opportunity to share what the company is doing well and where improvements are needed. All data is collected and analyzed by our People Ops team who then use the results to adjust current initiatives and to inform and create other initiatives that aim to improve the overall company experience and culture. We also host regular Executive AMAs where Nerds can ask pressing questions and receive answers in real time.
Nerds are our greatest asset and we are committed to investing in their wellbeing and providing them with the support and access needed to grow personally and professionally. We are focused on our Nerds and retaining the talent that helped our company grow to what it is today. Through career enrichment stipends, professional development check ins, accelerator programs, manager training and workshops and clarity around internal hiring processes, we are providing every Nerd with opportunity for growth because we believe it's important that every Nerd experiences impactful career development and satisfaction while at NerdWallet.
Creating an inspiring and inclusive environment for everyone is a top priority at NerdWallet. We have expanded our employee self-identification categories for broader inclusivity of gender identity, pronouns, sexual orientation, disability and military service. We launched a DE&I learning platform for all Nerds to learn about inclusivity and we have expanded the required training to managers. We also have established a tailored career development program for underrepresented groups of focus, specifically women in tech and BIPOC. And finally, our Employee Resource Groups support and sustain our DE&I efforts and serve as advocates for promoting inclusion in the workplace.
We believe a Loved Workplace is about inclusivity. At NerdWallet we have a Talent Development and Belonging team whose sole mission is to cultivate every Nerds’ potential. Throughout the year this team hosts manager-specific trainings to help managers further engrain this cultural identity at NerdWallet. Additionally, the team spearheaded the launch of Paradigm Reach, which provides DE&I training and resources for every Nerd. The tool provides courses and micro-learnings that help build inclusive workplaces. We also host an annual employee appreciation event called NerdLove to celebrate and acknowledge our Nerds.
Our CEO is passionate about the NerdWallet mission to provide critical financial education to people’s most important life financial decisions. This passion transfers to the mission to impact the community that surrounds NerdWallet, most notably communities in need and those who are unbanked or under banked. Our CEO moved $2 million company dollars to credit unions that invest in their local communities. The investment was impactful enough to inspire our first CSR initiative to make it easy for other companies to deposit cash into credit unions in low-income communities.
At NerdWallet, we believe in implementing programs and policies that support employees holistically. We invest in our Nerds and provide benefits such as 100% paid parental leave, 100% paid health insurance premiums and access to mental health tools as well as four paid Mental Health Days, paid sabbaticals and unlimited access to a Certified Financial Planner through Northstar. We also host cultural activities that encourage Nerds to find work-life balance including healthy habits contests that reward Nerds for their chosen acts of self-care; remote stipends; virtual workout classes; and countless virtual happy hours and activities.
We have embraced a remote-first philosophy and are committed to providing Nerds what they need to stay mentally healthy. At the onset of the pandemic we shifted our focus directly toward our employees. We launched Do Not Disturb Wednesdays, Mental Health Days and started a company-wide initiative called “Speedy Meetings,” where Nerds are encouraged to shorten meetings in order to give time back in their day. We also offer a work from home equipment stipend and co-working space subsidy for remote Nerds.
