We are a highly distributed company and so work hard to support collaboration throughout our teams. Cross-functionality is in our DNA and we believe that small groups of empowered people with different disciplines & perspectives are always best to tackle hard problems. In addition to a whole suite of collaboration tools we provide (Slack, Notion, Jira, Miro, Trello, etc.) we work to build relationships and connect people. We developed a custom Slack app to match random people for virtual coffees each week, and we have a very light hearted all-hands meeting each Friday which includes a DJ, team of the work, lightening talks about a host of varied topics, and a kudos board where we share positive feedback about each other. We believe that magic happens when we get together, so we pay for teams to travel to be together regularly, and for social events so they can get to know each other better.
This question is best addressed by a quote from our latest employee survey: “Zappi is unlike any other place I have ever worked. I feel respected by not only my colleagues, but by my direct management and by senior leadership. There is a sense of inclusion, and care for the employees. Senior leadership puts a large emphasis on a healthy work/life balance, mental health, social issues, and having trust in the employees. Hats off to Tom, Ryan, Steve and the rest of the Leadership Team, this is truly a great place to work and I am thankful everyday for the opportunity to work here. I am 100% bought in to the mission of the company and work each day to provide the most value to Zappi and its customers.”
It’s in our core values – we prioritise ‘Leadership Inside & Out’, which means we expect everyone to contribute and show leadership regardless of their level. We practice ‘Incisive Listening’ and ‘Courageous Honesty’ so we can get the best out of our increasingly diverse team. And we live ‘Inclusive Engagement’ in the way we run the company. We use the advice process which means that before making any decision we must consult with everyone impacted along with some experts, so we ensure a wide spectrum of voices are heard. Our leadership team have an open door policy and a regular standing meeting where anyone can bring topics, and we run a quarterly employee survey. The leadership team read every single comment and conduct a retro each quarter based on this feedback, to ensure all comments are heard and understood. We also train all leaders in Inclusive Leadership and regularly welcome speakers and arrange workshops around diversity & inclusion, because we know that having a diverse team isn’t enough, we need to make the best use of that diversity.

3. Organising training for different teams based on their key learning needs

As well as working tirelessly to enable Creators to develop better products and services, we care passionately about our people, our communities and the environment. We hire brilliant people who want to have an impact and work on our mission of disrupting an industry. We know our staff have a social and environmental conscience and we put a lot of thought and effort into this work. Whether that’s being a founding member of an Inclusion Pledge in our industry, or putting a significant effort behind becoming a Certified B Corp which we achieved in the last 12 months. We value our people and our culture as a key differentiator and point of competitive advantage, which shows in our 5% voluntary attrition rate from 2021.
First of all we make sure people feel heard, have hard problems to solve and are empowered to do their best work. We also put a lot of effort into ensuring people can show up everyday as themselves. We believe this is fundamental in creating a loved workplace. In addition we have all sorts of things people love: we get together once a year and have an amazing and inspiring week of workshops; we offer complete flexibility for people to design when, where and how they work; we pay very well and constantly look to improve our benefits; we have amazing office spaces where people get lunch and drinks provided alongside lots of other activities like live music, massage, table tennis etc. More than anything we are honest and transparent – we aren’t perfect, we make mistakes, but we own them and always look to improve. We find this is what people really care about.
There is a reason our CEO has a 94% approval rating on Glassdoor: https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Reviews/Zappi-Reviews-E1270074.htm – he is transparent, honest and embodies our company values. He pushes us to be more ambitious, to achieve greater things than we first thought possible, but he balances that ambition with a truly human and compassionate approach to leadership. At the core of his approach and our culture is TRUST – he lives by the mantra of “We hire brilliant people, trust them to get the job done, work to inspire them and get out of their way!”
In addition to benchmarking to the 75th percentile in the market and providing a competitive core benefits suite (Healthcare, Pension/401k, Critical illness/death in service), we offer a number of unique benefits. Firstly we offer radical flexibility. Each employee decides where, how and when they work in consultation with their team. This allows each person to tailor their experience of work to their needs, and means in our last survey 93% of employees agreed Zappi supports their positive wellbeing. In addition we provide access to trained counsellors through Slack, unlimited holidays with a set minimum for all employees to take, and quarterly mental health days where we close the whole company so people can recharge. We care deeply about our employees wellbeing and we put actions behind our words.
Our approach has not changed through the pandemic. We want all employees to feel safe and productive, and we trust each person to design their experience of work. We offer fully-distributed, hybrid or fully-office based work to all employees. We offer lots of in person activities but we also respect and accommodate people who aren’t able or don’t feel safe to attend.
