How employees collaborate
Employees collaborate throughout our company by leveraging technology including Branching Out – our internal social media platform - to stay engaged and informed and all that is going on in the company. We also encourage cross-functional projects & initiatives that provide tangible opportunities for teammates to work together. One such example is our Talent Advisory Council. This council is comprised of senior leaders from across the organization that provide thought leadership and feedback on major talent initiatives such as our leadership development strategy, our enterprise talent philosophy or our succession planning processes. This serves as a terrific way for the group to engage with HR, to collaborate with one another and inform our talent agenda.
A positive vision for the future
Employees at our company have a positive vision for the future because we have a leadership team that instills optimism for the future. We also have a solid track record of performance and on executing on our corporate Strategy. We have generated great momentum and continue to build upon that momentum. Our recent Voice of the Teammate Engagement survey confirmed that 81% of our teammates have a high degree of confidence in Senior Management and 82% believe that Atlantic Union Bank leaders have cast a clear vision for the future. Both of these metrics exceed the 75th percentile benchmark.
How values are demonstrated
Our company values are aligned with our employees because our teammates tell us so. Our core values are Caring, Courageous & Committed and our recent Voice of the Teammate served as an opportunity to ask our teammates what adjectives they would use to describe our Culture and caring, inclusive, courageous, committed, among other values were common themes, showing our values are deeply embedded in our culture and exemplified by our teammates.
How employees are respected
We show respect and ensure that all voices are heard and ideas are valued throughout the company by supporting a culture of listening. We are open and transparent with a thoughtful and inclusive listening strategy. While we have a formal, annual engagement survey that we deploy (that serves as a fantastic way to listen to feedback and consequently action on that feedback) there are a myriad of others ways that we engage our teammates for feedback and in dialogue, as well. We host an “Ask Us Anything” forum as part of our Quarterly Town Halls. Our teammates have the opportunity to ask the senior leadership team anything (nothing is off limits.) Anything that may not be addressed in the 60-90 minute Town Hall is published on our internal social media platform (Branching Out) with robust questions & answers. Our CEO and CHRO also participate in monthly TEA (Teammate Experience Advocate) meetings. Representatives from across the organization participate in TEA and engage in a “Rose, Bud, Thorn” exercise; a facilitated way to seek feedback on what is going well (a Rose), what may serve as an opportunity to improve (a Bud) or a Thorn (a pain-point.) Our leadership hears first-hand from all levels of the organization, how things are going in the company. Our CEO affectionally refers to this group as his “Chief Tellers of the Truth.” We are proud of the inclusive & respectful culture we have created at Atlantic Union Bank which is evidence by 92% of all teammates feeling like they are treated with respect.
How employees are supported
We support our employees in achieving their professional and personal goals by investing in their growth & development. We’ve made investments in a Learning Experience Platform (Elevate) that gives our teammates access to relevant learning courses and engage with others on the same platform to enhance the social learning components of their experience. We also have an award-winning development program by the name of EMerge. EMerge is an enterprise program to engage and retain high potential talent by focusing on self-development and career exploration by giving participants opportunities to: Improve public speaking, Interact with senior leaders in the bank, Create a compelling personal brand, Gain insights through assessments and Broaden exposure to other Line of Businesses. This program has received National recognition. We have a robust performance management process, as well, with tools & resources to equip our leaders to have meaningful & ongoing conversations about career development. We also recognize the criticality of leadership development and have made investments in curriculum and experiences to develop our leaders. We recently debuted Line of Business Insider Calls which give teammates direct access to senior leaders who share information about their line of business in facilitated sessions and share insights about career opportunities that are available across in each respective area across the Bank. Currently 42% of our open roles are filled by internal candidates – a metric we are proud of and a testament to our commitment to help teammates grow their careers at Atlantic Union Bank.
How leadership demonstrates values
Our CEO serves as a model of our company values by consistently doing what he says he’s going to do. John, our CEO, has led by example and lives by our values of Caring, Courageous & Committed. John is not afraid to make tough, and at times unpopular decisions that may be necessary to effectively balance the needs of all stakeholders – thus requiring courage. However, it is how he goes about doing it – in such a way that demonstrates care, this is uncharacteristic. One such example was when the banking industry was in turmoil amidst several bank failures. John was decisive in our expense management efforts while caring for teammates throughout that process.
Programs and practices
Programs and practices we give to our employees that create a Loved Workplace are we recently announced a change to our PTO policy that allow our teammates to rollover their PTO (up to 40 hours) and to use that PTO time for Mental Health & Wellbeing. That can include a day off to go hiking, to rest & recuperate, or to invest in social wellbeing by spending time with loved ones. We believe strongly in supporting our teammates and this is one tangible example of doing so. At Atlantic Union Bank we believe in delivering experiences to our teammates in an authentically human way, while leveraging technology to enable that. A recent change to our Onboarding Program included unveiling an in-person Onboarding Experience titled “Stronger Together.” This experience is a cultural immersion to AUB with rich content on topics such as DEIB, our company’s history, our commitment to the community & more. These Stronger Together Onboarding Experiences are attended and championed by our CEO, COO & CHRO and create meaningful, memorable experiences for our new teammates.
Benefits
Examples of unique benefits, bonus, or compensation we provide are while we have a number of unique benefits & offerings for our teammates, I’ll highlight just one that we’re particularly proud of related to caring for our teammates during the loss of a loved one. Last year, we also discovered that our bereavement policies were lagging compared to our peers. Not only did we enhance the policy – extending both the time off and expanding the definition of a family member to make it more inclusive – we also made investments in a benefit offering by the name of Empathy. This offering provides services to help teammates cope with the loss of a loved one – including assistance navigating the administration process following the loss and grief counseling. We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback in response to these changes. The loss of a loved one is a “moment that matters” for our teammates and we’re proud of the strides we’ve made to care for our teammates when they need it most.
Pandemic response
The biggest workplace change that occurred as a result of COVID was embracing a flexible workplace model. While many companies are reverting to pre-pandemic workplace policies – Atlantic Union Bank is holding steadfast to its commitment to being a progressive company that embraces flexibility, particularly in the Financial Services Industry, where more traditional models are more commonly adopted. We have hybrid, resident and fully remote roles and generally ask that our hybrid teammates anchor around 3 days a week in-house; a term we refer to as Structured Hybrid. We want to support our teammates in and outside of the office and recognize that benefits that can be achieved when we embrace flexibility.
