Our Mission of being “called to serve our communities” is what we, as health care professionals, are driven to do. It’s what gets us out of bed each day and what puts a smile on our face when we see our patients’ health improve. It may seem obvious, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It takes a special kind of person and multidisciplinary teamwork to put the needs of others first. Communication, collaboration and accountability provide the foundation. From a small brick house to a health system that provides state-of-the-art medical services across nine Ohio counties, Adena employees have had a positive vision for the future for over 125 years. Adena serves as an economic catalyst as one of the largest area employers and continues to grow to provide specialized care found in larger urban markets closer to where our patients and their families call home. The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges that none of us have seen in health care. But we responded, taking the lead in helping our communities navigate the crisis and stay safe.
Adena understands the importance of listening to our caregivers. The more we listen, the more we can evaluate organizational changes and increase caregiver engagement. Adena is committed to excellence in caregiver engagement. When caregivers are involved with, committed to, and enthusiastic about their workplace this translates into better patient care, stronger relationships and improve overall performance. Several times through the year, the organization conducts employee engagement and well-being surveys as a method to collect opinions from our caregivers that lead to ways we can better serve our caregivers, patients and communities.
Our performance management philosophy and program incorporate goal setting and achievement. Currently, goal setting and achievement is required for all of management. Goals are set in a strategic way. Conversely, goal setting is optional for all other team members. During COVID, we applied understanding and flexibility to allow our caregivers to focus solely on their day-to-day role responsibilities and wellbeing. In addition to performance goals, Adena has invested on $2.5m in tuition reimbursement the last 3 years. Adena also partners with area university to offer an MA Certification Program and an Advance Nurse Practice program to incumbent caregivers.
Our values align with our caregivers. In 2020, we conducted focus groups involving a diverse group of all levels (500+ participants). The intent was to socialize, engage, and commit to a new set of values and belief statements. Our goal is to align all programs and experiences to our corporate values. Our orientation program is designed to acclimate caregivers into our culture by introducing them to our values expectations. Our management team conduct regular review and feedback sessions with their team discussing job performance and elements of living our values. Our values are what has and will evolve our culture.

Jeff embodies Adena’s values at every turn and with every employee, patient and community member interaction. His integrity has lead him into the position he is today and his compassion and vision for what Adena is and will be into the future establishes a trust inside the organization and with our health care, community and business partners.
Over the years, this has been an improvement for us. Many jobs were not competitive in the market or were experiencing equity concerns. To resolve this, Adena conducted a full market and equity review of all jobs and implemented over $6.2 million in adjustments to base pay effecting over 2,600 caregivers. In addition to these compensation adjustments, we have also implemented creative compensation solutions: Variable Compensation Plan for Management team, Caregiver Referral Bonuses, Sign-on Bonuses to assist with recruitment, Retention Bonuses ($4.1 million paid since 2020), COVID Appreciation Payments of over $3 million, a $900,000 investment in Well-Being program.
There have been many accommodations since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Remote work flexibility, Childcare Relief, Pandemic PTO (above & beyond the OSHA ETS requirement), Employee Assistance Program, Wellness Rooms with massage chairs, snacks, & yoga mats providing a calm & relaxing environment, roaming massages provided by local masseuses, free meals provided to caregivers, weekly video updates offered by Chief Operating Officer and Chief Clinical Officer, & webinars for leaders on how to manage through a pandemic. Daily debriefs for front line staff with leaders on to solve challenges in the moment. Pulse surveys to solicit feedback on changes.
