Employees at FreeWill collaborate by working together to build, design, and roll out products that help nonprofits raise money. We have brainstorm sessions, collaborative decision "gate" meetings, and use Slack to be in regular communication about projects.
Our employees have a positive vision for the future because every day they show up to work and build things that help nonprofits raise money. They can directly see the impacts of their work shifting money into high-impact organizations.
We do a monthly Ask Me Anything with our co-CEOs where employees anonymously submit questions, ideas and feedback and the co-CEOs spend an hour responding to them live. We do regular pulse surveys and an annual engagement survey to create additional anonymous ways for people to raise concerns and share ideas and feedback.
Through our annual review, 360 review, and 2x2 (upward/downward feedback) processes, we focus on making sure employees have actionable feedback on what they're doing well and where they can grow. We have a professional development budget of $1,000 per employee per year for employees to use toward growth and learning -- people use this for books, conferences, trainings, coaching, and professional certifications.
Our company values of kindness, courage, focus and joy are aligned with our employees because they want to show up every day to do work that matters toward a clear goal, be treated well by colleagues, and celebrate wins, big and small.
Mission: Our team members are passionate about the work they do and can see the impact that these products bring. So far we've raised $9 billion for nonprofits, and our employees are really focused and engaged on bringing that kind of change into the world.
Fun: We do regular fun activities as a team -- whether it's a mocktail class or a talent show. We also do informal "coffee chats" in which team members share about their life or an experience -- recently a team member shared about his experience of van life, and another shared about becoming a DJ.
Sense of Belonging and Connection: Through identity-based employee resource groups (ERGs), hobby-based slack channels, and donut chats that pair random co-workers for conversations, we look for a variety of ways to connect staff to each other in a remote environment.
They are very transparent with the team and act on feedback they receive. For example, when they heard from employees that there wasn't enough clarity on our strategy, they started providing a bi-weekly update in our all-team meeting to make sure that employee's had that focus.
We are fully remote - the flexibility that people have to work from anywhere is a big draw for a lot of employees, whether they are parents looking for flexibility, or travelers looking to live a nomad life.
We have a professional development budget of $1,000 per year that allows employees to invest in their growth and access trainings, conferences, and other resources without having to convince anyone!
We have a monthly co-working budget to allow people to get out of the house if they like!
We have a strong parental leave program (12 weeks for all parents) to support new parents and gender equity.
FreeWill is an award-winning, social-good startup that has partnered with 1450+ nonprofits who support our mission while raising more than $9B in bequests to charities since we were founded in 2017. We’ve been featured in the New York Times, Forbes, Oprah’s magazine, and our co-CEOs have even been named to Town & Country’s “Top 50 Philanthropists” list.
All of this is because we’ve figured out how to make some powerful (but complicated!) ways to donate much easier and more accessible. Our products make things easier for the donors who want to change the world and for nonprofits doing heroic work around the planet.
