We work in a relatively flat environment. While we all have leadership, and work in functional teams, every person in this company is empowered to reach out to those at the top with thoughts, concerns, and ideas. Our C-suite (we call them the Senior Leadership Team) is accessible and available to virtually anyone in the company who needs to speak with them. We equally value how we get things done as well as the results we deliver, and there is less focus on “who gets credit” than on what we accomplish together.

We invest in teammate skills, knowledge, and training through programs across the entire company.
For DVMs, all first-year DVMs take part in our 12 month Mentorship program, where they are provided with two mentors and a structured 12 month education program that they complete with a cohort. We provide a Leadership Academy, where our experienced Veterinarians learn leadership skills they may not have been exposed to in Veterinary school. We offer Hospital Manager and DVM Foundations training for those joining SVP as new teammates, as well as Veterinary Dental Education and surgical training programs to enhance skills in Dentistry, where most Veterinarians are not formally trained. We have a program called Vet Tech Vision, which pays for our Veterinary Assistants to get the education and certification needed to advance their career while providing a community to support them in this accomplishment. We host continuing education events, and bring in speakers to enhance the skills and knowledge of teammates across SVP. And, we promote from within, regardless of whether a teammate has followed a traditional educational path, or has shown promise through hands-on and on-the-job experience.

Jay Price, DVM, is the only General Practice Veterinarian leading a company like ours in the nation. As a founder, and the CEO of SVP, having taken the company through rounds of investment, he chooses to stay and invest his time and energy both due to his love of, and dedication to, Veterinary medicine and its practitioners, and his desire to create a broad and lasting positive impact for those who have invested their time and efforts as SVP teammates. He embodies WAG values, and emphasizes and rewards them across the company. He will give up his chair to make sure everyone has a seat at the table, and prefers to shine a light on others’ accomplishments rather than his own. He never backs down from a challenge, and always supports teammates going through challenges of their own.

We support our teammates with health, dental, vision, critical illness, life, accident, hospital indemnity, long and short term disability insurance. We provide paid time off, including industry-leading TruePTO for DVMs (with no production make-up). We provide DVM maternity leave, and support programs for those teammates who are caring for elderly, going through life events like divorce, birth of a child, moving to a new community, buying or selling a home. We provide mental health counseling to support teammates through difficult life events, as well as a hefty 401k match, and support with retirement planning. We provide significant support for career growth and education (see above!), and through all this, focus on living our WAG values in how we work together and collaborate every day.

Our response to COVID-19

Most of our teammates are in the field supporting their communities in providing medical care to pets. Because of this, remote work was not possible during covid. We strove to provide all necessary PPE and support for our teammates to adhere to federal, state, and local guidelines (which varied widely across the country). Our teammates were empowered to set their own policies based upon what is culturally appropriate based upon the communities they serve, and state and local laws enacted.
