Joining inclusion Eaton Resource Groups (iERGs). These eight groups build cultural competency and get involved in talent initiatives. In 2021 they grew from 10,500 members to more than 11,600. They also helped Eaton attract talent, with 23% of referrals for new hires coming from iERG members. Internally, they held 230+ learning events to engage employees on a global scale. Hackathons, introduced by our ENGAGE (Eaton Next Generation Achieving Goals and Excelling) iERG, are a program where diverse teams tackle complex challenges to drive innovation. In 2021, they led to 67 ideas, with winning teams presenting their solutions to senior leaders.
We’re helping to limit the increase of the world’s temperature to 1.5°C by committing to science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets. By 2030, we’re committed to cutting carbon emissions from our operations by 50%, becoming carbon neutral and to working with customers and suppliers to reduce emissions throughout our value chain by 15%. We also aim to increase the representation of salaried global women and U.S. minorities and achieve an index inclusion score of 80% or higher by 2030.
Surveying our employees every two years. Feedback from this powerful tool has helped us improve, resulting in notable changes such as flexible work solutions, new leadership development programs and improvements to our internal recruitment process. In 2021, 86% of employees who participated in the survey said they were proud to work at Eaton. Company-wide Town Halls are another way employees can connect with leaders by raising questions and speaking up. We also hold listening circles, which are small, safe spaces across Eaton where employees can respond to current events by sharing their feelings and supporting each other.
Offering a well-being strategy built on 3 pillars: mental, financial and physical health. We also offer 1,500+ online and instructor-led courses through Eaton University, our internal continuing education center. Our Stretch Assignment Marketplace (SAM) program provides development opportunities worldwide where employees work on Eaton projects while learning and networking. We also offer a mentorship program, along with healthcare/retirement savings programs, Care.com services and tuition assistance for ongoing learning and development.

Ally advocacy circles which promote active listening. Launched by our WAVE iERG, the circles are small, gender-balanced conversations held in all parts of the world to build foundational knowledge on common types of bias against women. In 2022, WAVE set a goal to have 2,022 people sign up for them. By the end of February, there were more than 300 circles surrounding International Women’s Day and the goal was met. Because Eaton is committed to equal opportunity, we have a dedicated team that looks at pay data and our compensation programs, policies and practices to ensure employees are paid fairly.
Committing Eaton to the Catalyst CEO Champions for Change Initiative and signing the I ACT ON pledge. In 2021, he also worked with the Business Roundtable to launch the Second Chance Business Coalition (SCBC) to improve access to employment and advancement for people with prior criminal convictions. In just one year, the SCBC grew from 29 to 40 Fortune 500 member companies. Our leadership team also models inclusion and diversity. At the end of 2021, more than two-thirds of our directors were either women or U.S. minorities and 54% of our global leadership team were U.S. minorities.
Our online E-STAR program allows employees to give and receive recognition in the form of E-STARS. On average, 500K+ awards are given each year. In 2021, we saw an increase in the inclusion and diversity reason, with 22,082 awards issued. This marked a 26% increase from the year before. We also offer paid time off for vacations, sick days and holiday observances, as well as additional pay and time off for overtime work; donation-matching; recognition programs for a range of achievements, a referral program with rewards for finding the right candidate and competitive compensation packages that reward skills and performance.
