The little things: daily Good Mornings on Slack, regular one-to-ones with your manager, socials. The bigger things: monthly Town Hall meetings for our CEO to update company-wide, monthly management meetings for department heads to collaborate, remove blockers and realign. Our business consists of two key departments: commercial and non-commercial. This ensures teams aren’t working in silos, and we are one connected business. One of our company values is “work together” and this is embedded in everything we do. Our product is a collaborative effort, created by designers, engineers, salespeople, customer success and operations – we all work together to create our product.
Our industry is the future. We work in the metaverse, and we were the first to market in our space. We’re creating the VR-as-a-service industry, and demand is huge. Apple launching their VR headset, confirms we are entering a mass-market period. How often are we at the beginning of a massive industry with a front row seat? This is a once in a generation opportunity. Positivity for the future also comes from successes of the past. We have been around for 10 years, with no investment or funding, purely due to the hard work and entrepreneurship of our team and CEO. We know we can do it alone, but now, with the support of our investors, we can do it bigger and better.
Honesty. We are an open, honest, environment, where direct feedback and transparency are valued. The more honest we are with each other, the more respect we can have.
Respect everyone’s opinion – anyone can approach anyone else in the business, regardless of level. All opinions and ideas are valid and encouraged.
Respect differences – we’re a casual environment, with a diverse team, and we want everyone to feel comfortable to be themselves. Creativity and being “different” makes us better. If people are comfortable to be who they want to be, respect comes naturally.
Culture Manager – a designated role to make sure everyone is heard. A short-cut to make change, reporting directly to the CEO, not HR.
We have a learning budget for all employees which they can spend as they please to assist their own development. We have a solid performance framework and career development plans to ensure that goals are clear, and support to reach them is given. We have regular support from external coaches, such as Sales Trainers, and workshops (learning styles, mental health awareness, female empowerment etc). We offer paid time off for people to volunteer and give back to the community.
We have a strong track record of promoting from within and employee mobility. We offer flexibility and respect around personal circumstances such as being a parent, studying, counselling etc.
We consider our values at every stage of every process, and they are embedded in what we do. We have lived them for 10 years. They were written by employees, and they are concepts that we live and breathe daily. The proof is in our product, our story, and the business. Be daring, drive diversity, work together, make an impact, stay agile, keep it simple. These are considered in our team, our product, every training programme, who we work with…everything.
We also assess personal values during interviews and monitor through our performance framework, to ensure our employees embody the values that make us Gemba Superstars.
We have a designated Culture Manager and Mental Health First Aiders. We run regular incentives, themed days, and quarterly parties, including the Gemba Champion incentive – anonymously vote for who has gone above and beyond, for the chance to double your salary for a month! We constantly share the successes of the business through kudos and shout-outs, Slack – a constant channel of praise and support, the “deal clap” and handshake from the CEO for every, single deal. Casual dress-code – we allow people to express themselves as they see fit, so they can put all their effort into being great at their job. A great office.
He’s been in our shoes, doing almost every role within the business, starting as a salesperson on the sales floor, just like many of our employees. His door is always open to anyone in the business, and he’s always present. Since incorporation, he has not taken a single penny of dividends, profit, or extracted any cash from the business. With exception of normal PAYE salary, he’s purposely reinvested everything into the company, our people, product and culture. He’s also been intrinsic in helping the company donate over £1m to the Toyota charitable foundation over the last 8 years. He gives away control happily and respects people’s time, experience, and space, and always keeps his promises (see below).
You get all the perks of working in a startup/scale up environment (innovation, speed, dynamism, progression, casual, fun!)…with all the benefits of a corporate company. (Personal security, private healthcare, personal development, great incentives and wellbeing). Benefits include:
