Practicing our first of 6 core values - Collaboration. Helainites at every level are encouraged to tackle challenges together and seek alternate perspectives. Our R&D Team in particular is cross-trained on the various equipment and processes throughout our lab so they can jump into initiatives and contribute to projects outside of their specialties at a moment’s notice. For example, Entry Level Lab Technicians and Research Associates are hired onto our Lab Operations Team their first year on the job to allow for a full immersion into all areas of R&D before deciding which area they will ultimately focus on.
Helaina’s CEO and Founder Laura Katz shares an overview of the company mission, values and culture as part of the new hire onboarding process. Helainites at all levels write individual OKRs encouraging them to reach company milestones, and updates are shared with all Helainites on a monthly basis at All-Hands Meetings. Each quarter, we celebrate our wins and achievements from the previous quarter while reviewing organization-wide OKR focuses for the following quarter so our progress as a company can be celebrated at every milestone.
By practicing our Empathy Core Value everyday - We value understanding perspectives of others and learning how to best communicate with different team members, and take active interest in understanding different viewpoints and guiding with thoughtfulness. We regularly survey our team for feedback on various initiatives. For example, before we revamped our new hire onboarding process, all Helainites were invited to complete an anonymous survey to provide feedback on their early experience, first day, training and engagement. The feedback we received helped us understand that all new Helainites joining the company wanted to be trained more in the various software we use regularly. The new onboarding process now includes training sessions and dedicated time for new hires to focus on learning specific software and tools.
Providing quarterly project and goal based feedback. Each quarter, Helainites complete self-evaluations reflecting on their OKR performance and development in Helaina’s Leadership Competencies rooted in growth and development. Helaina’s People Strategy aligns with our vision, mission, values and goals to achieve operational excellence through support, connection and engagement with each other.

The Culture Club, Annual Core Values Awards and Leadership Competencies are a few programs that were created in 2022 to bring Helaina’s Core Values to life. Events that bring our hybrid team together. Our summer sail around the Hudson River, Thanksgiving Potluck and Monthly Birthday Celebrations are a few of the fun and engaging events that bring our team together to let loose and bond. We also have a fully stocked kitchen with snacks and beverages, flexible working hours and a casual dress code.
Prioritizing company culture and values at all times. She is a hands-on leader, who prioritizes getting to know everyone who works at our company and the key roles they play on our team. Laura founded Helaina on the belief that breastfeeding should not define the health of a child—or the worth of a parent. This belief translates into her philosophy around equity in the workplace. Helaina is the first company to make proteins found in human breast milk.
With our human milk proteins, we are creating a new category of infant formula that will support the immune system. As Helaina grows, we will use our proprietary technology platform to make more ingredients for use in many types of nutritional foods.
