We know ideas that spark meaningful advancements can happen anytime, anywhere, and come from any employee. That’s why we work hard to provide flexible ways for creative, productive collaboration to happen – in fact, collaboration is one of Horizon’s organizational competencies. Our modern, open work environments have plenty of spaces dedicated for just that. And for employees who work remotely, Horizon offers virtual tools that enable effective communication across the globe.
Horizon, one of the fastest-growing biotechnology companies, had record growth in 2021, leading to an increase in both full-year 2021 net sales and adjusted EBITDA guidance. This year of tremendous growth enabled Horizon to invest in research and development capabilities and talent, significantly expand the pipeline, increase manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand and achieve outstanding financial results. In our recent engagement survey, more employees than ever before said they would recommend Horizon as a great place to work and believe Horizon is on track to be successful in the future.
The key to retaining employees is by building a culture in which all employees feel included and bring their authentic selves to work. To better understand each other and how to be better allies, Horizon’s RiSE approach to diversity, inclusion, equity and allyship features an annual RiSE Day of Understanding. This year’s event included an “Ask Me Anything” panel in which employees asked provocative questions to three panelists with diverse backgrounds. Throughout the year employees are encouraged to engage in our nine diverse employee communities where community members and allies can come together to foster community and build diverse networks across the organization. In Horizon’s 2022 employee engagement survey, responses were significantly above the top quartile benchmark for “I am comfortable voicing my ideas and opinions, even if they are different from others” and “People from diverse backgrounds can succeed at Horizon.”
Horizon supports and invests in our employees’ career development. From monthly manager check-ins where learning and development is top-of-mind, to formal trainings, mentoring and networking, we do everything we can to ensure our employees have the tools and resources to continuously grow professionally and personally. Every employee also has access to a suite of development resources, from self-paced resources available through Horizon’s online learning platform GrowU, LinkedIn Learning and getAbstract, to instructor-led development programs, mentoring programs and external professional partnerships.
Horizon is guided by three core values: transparency, in which employees trust each other to tackle tough challenges; accountability, which is enhanced by listening to and learning from employees; and growth, which is brought to life through a continuous focus on employee development.
At Horizon, making sure employees feel support is important. That’s why employees can take advantage of a Make It Personal Account, which can be used in a way that is important to each employee. Whether they choose to be reimbursed for fitness, child care or education expenses, or for a donation to a meaningful cause, this account is dedicated to their continued well-being. Horizon also offers a “Make It Personal Day,” which encourages employees to take a day away from work and do something personal to them such as volunteering or spending time with family.
For Tim, Horizon is so much more than a business – it’s personal. In college, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and 10 years later, after seeing more than 100 physicians, was diagnosed with a rare disease. Today, his continued daily desire and commitment to go to incredible lengths building a team that supports patients, caregivers, communities and employees sets Horizon apart from its peers and sustains a culture employees appreciate and the values that guide the company every day.
We provide our employees with a benefits program that is both comprehensive and competitive. Our award-winning benefits program is about providing both top-notch health benefits and a supportive, flexible work culture that includes paid parental leave, adoption assistance, surrogacy assistance, a year-end shutdown and amenable working arrangements that cater to people’s lives. Horizon also offers tuition reimbursement and on-site child care at its U.S. headquarters and has adopted processes and controls to prevent bias in salary and compensation decisions. We are proud to confirm that our employees receive equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity.
Although only required by law for companies with fewer than 500 employees, Horizon put a COVID-19 leave policy in place for its employees. The new policy offered 100% pay continuation to employees impacted by the virus and provided 12 weeks of paid time off to medical professionals who chose to use their services in the community. As an additional benefit, Horizon hosted an onsite COVID-19 vaccine clinic so employees and their families could access the vaccine more easily. Horizon also introduced new policies for the safety of employees such as a vaccine mandate for employees and contractors, remote work flexibility, mask requirements, and a Trace & Protect program to assist in contact tracing.
Horizon is focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of medicines that address critical needs for people impacted by rare, autoimmune and severe inflammatory diseases.
