As a global organization with 70,000 colleagues, building a culture where all colleagues feel connected is critical to who we are and what we do. Sysco has invested in technology to support employee collaboration across our global organization, including an employee mobile app that serves as a platform to connect and engage our colleagues. In addition, through the implementation of MS Teams, Sysco was able to more than triple attendance at its global quarterly townhalls, hosted by our CEO and other senior leaders. We also introduced podcasting as a new means to share information about the business and critical pandemic-related messaging.
In 2020, Sysco unveiled our new Purpose – Connecting the world to share food and care for one another — which aligns our colleagues globally around a common sense of purpose that grounds them in the decisions they make, the work they do and the people who work for them. Our purpose also fuels our business strategy, our Recipe for Growth future. This strategy is defined by five strategic pillars which feeds and creates a powerful growth cycle. Our colleagues see Sysco as not only advancing the foodservice distribution industry but also redefining it, by building customer-centric, retail-like capabilities for our customers and investing in our people, technology and supply chain in ways that others cannot duplicate.
Creating a respectful environment where every colleague is heard and it is required of all our leaders and our colleagues – it’s a collective effort and a priority. Through our annual Sysco Speaks survey, colleagues can anonymously provide input on the organization’s direction and employee experience. The results of this survey, and feedback from Real Talk Dialogues and Be Better townhalls, are used to help shape Sysco’s future. Also, our CEO and other senior leaders visit sites to hear directly from our colleagues.
Every leader at Sysco works with colleagues to identify annual goals to work towards. While goals are developed to align with our Purpose and Recipe for Growth strategy, we also encourage associates to find opportunities for professional development and stretch goals to challenge themselves. Sysco also offers continued education opportunities for our colleagues in the form of an education reimbursement program. For colleagues interested in pursuing leadership opportunities, Sysco implemented a leadership development program in 2020. Through this program, we identify future Sysco leaders and help them develop their leadership skills with trainings and mentorships.
At Sysco, we know how important it is for our colleagues and our business to work towards the same goals. Our Purpose, mission and values support our colleagues’ desire to make a difference, not only for our customers, but in the communities in which we operate. Whether it’s volunteering in the community or establishing aggressive climate goals, our commitment to care for people is why our colleagues want to work at Sysco and our customers want to partner with us. Our employees come to work knowing that their contribution is making a difference in our communities.
Our employees are proud to work for the global foodservice leader and appreciate that our Purpose means more than just delivering groceries. They love to help put food on the table for life’s special moments and are like family in our customers’ kitchens and supply rooms worldwide. More than 600 colleagues globally volunteered for our Global DEI Council, reflecting their enthusiasm for our work to create an inclusive environment for all. Our colleagues also value our 12 colleague resource groups, hunger relief and volunteer recognition programs, and bold climate action.
Kevin Hourican, Sysco’s president and chief executive officer models our company values through his public commitment to our communities, climate goals and sustainability efforts, as well as his public commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable workplace. Sysco’s Executive Leadership Team is more gender and racially diverse than it has been in Sysco’s history with nearly 50% diversity. Kevin also volunteers regularly alongside Sysco colleagues in support of our non-profit partnerships. Kevin values direct colleague feedback, traveling to our operating sites to hold townhalls and meeting directly with colleagues when possible, including hosting regular small group lunch meetings with sales representatives.
It’s important that our colleagues can benefit from the hard work and commitment they put into growing our company. Therefore, Sysco offers our colleagues the opportunity to invest in our company through our discounted Employee Stock Purchase Program. We offer competitive compensation and benefits programs based on employees’ performance. Another unique benefit is Sysco’s Disaster Relief Foundation. The Foundation supports Sysco U.S. colleagues who are impacted by federally declared national disasters, such as Hurricane Ida and wildfires, helping to provide for immediate needs as soon as possible, usually within days of receiving the application.
Sysco is the global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments and other customers who prepare meals away from home. Its family of products also includes equipment and supplies for the foodservice and hospitality industries. With more than 60,000 colleagues, the company operates 343 distribution facilities worldwide and serves more than 650,000 customer locations.
