Why is Veritiv a Most Loved Workplace®?

In March 2023, 91% of Veritiv employees completed an employee engagement survey. Veritiv achieved an overall engagement score of 85, representing a 3-point increase from 2022. Key feedback included 90% of employees saying they felt like a good fit with Veritiv’s culture and the way it does things as a company, and 88% percent expressing confidence in company strategy and leadership. Both scores were 3-point increases over 2022, and Veritiv continues to invest in enhancing the employee experience.

These values shape the business and define who its people are as a company. Veritiv places employee satisfaction at the top of the priority list, consistently seeking feedback and searching for areas of improvement to make work feel like home. Leadership emphasizes a One Team mindset, which embraces diverse perspectives that foster collaboration. By holding professional career development sessions, integrating its five employee resource groups that motivate employee expression, and conducting regular employee engagement surveys and pulse surveys to gather suggestions and feedback, Veritiv strives to uphold its core values and create an uplifting work environment.

CEO Sal Abbate demonstrates excellent intuition in changing key elements of Veritiv processes and culture to positively impact employees. When he set out to better understand what employees at all levels liked, disliked, and wanted to see changed, the result was more than 600 employees from across North America participating in a series of small-group, live-video roundtable sessions with Sal and other senior leaders.

The resultant feedback was transformed into action plans implemented over the past three years. From simple things like the “Dress for Your Day” guidelines, to the more complex new profit sharing for 4,700 employees who were not previously eligible for a bonus, Sal uses all available tools to boost morale.

Sal’s “listening tour” exemplifies his open, collaborative, and approachable leadership style. Sal makes time to talk to a variety of employees, including through regular site visits to Veritiv’s numerous office and warehouse locations. He leads monthly, live all-employee webcasts to answer questions and hear suggestions about the business, company news, and other initiatives.

Sal spearheaded Veritiv’s first all-employee survey in 2022. In the 2023 survey, employees expressed overwhelming optimism and pride about the direction Veritiv was moving under Sal’s leadership. Their comments expressed appreciation for his transparent communication and his consistent commitment to positive change.

Employees repeatedly comment that the community at Veritiv and the people they work with are their primary reasons for staying at the organization. Veritiv’s commitment to its people is a driver of employee satisfaction, and ensures leadership works to help employees feel empowered and comfortable within their team. In addition, the positive relationships employees form with each other dramatically enhance the workplace environment, and motivate team members to choose long-term careers with Veritiv.

As a company, Veritiv fosters frequent, engaging conversation via its internal communications platform, Vibe. This platform connects Veritiv’s locations around the world and makes the company feel like a community where diverse perspectives are met with enthusiasm. Veritiv conducts regular employee engagement surveys and internal Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys. Managers and leaders are required to create specific action plans with their teams as a result of these surveys.

Veritiv's monthly all-employee webcasts provide an open forum for team members to ask questions of their CEO and other senior leaders. Veritiv also has five employee resource groups (Women, African-American, LBGTQ+, Hispanic/Latin, and Veterans/Military Families) aimed at giving a voice to underrepresented groups across the organization.

In 2022, Veritiv brought together 600 people leaders to collaborate on improving employee and customer experiences, and to develop widespread action plans. Providing a forum where a variety of employees could share perspectives from their own parts of the organization led to meaningful positive change.

According to its most recent Employee Engagement Survey, 88% of Veritiv’s employees agree with the statement, “there is good cooperation and collaboration across my team or group,” up 2 points from 2022. Collaboration has been a key focus across all of Veritiv’s priorities, and in 2022, it implemented an internal Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey to let employees provide positive and constructive feedback to other departments they interact with on a regular basis. Veritiv also implemented an online recognition platform, BRAVO, to reinforce collaboration and the One Team focus that is a key company value.

Some of Veritiv’s many benefits include:
Profit-sharing plans for all employees.
Matching 100% of the first 3% employees contribute from a paycheck, plus an additional 50% of the next 2% contributed. This comes out to Veritiv matching 4% of the first 5% an employee contributes—and the Veritiv match is immediately vested.
Tuition reimbursement program.
Annual scholarship program for children of Veritiv employees.
Charitable contributions that match up to $10,000 per employee, per year.
Paid parental bonding time for mothers and fathers, which includes time to bond with adopted children.
An additional investment in health care programs for 2023, so that employees’ health premiums remained the same as, or were even lower than, the previous year’s.
Additional holiday time and an additional floating holiday, both added in 2023.
As of 2024, 8 hours of paid time off for volunteering, available annually for each employee.
