According to our most recent Employee Engagement Survey, 88% of employees believe “there is good cooperation and collaboration across my team or group,” up 2 points from 2022. Collaboration has been a key focus across all of our company priorities. We implemented an Internal Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey in 2022 to enable employees to provide positive and constructive feedback to other departments they interact with on a regular basis. We also implemented an online recognition platform called BRAVO! (through Achievers) to reinforce collaboration and a One Team focus.

In March 2023, 91% of our employees completed the Employee Engagement Survey, and we achieved an overall engagement score of 85, an increase of 3 points from 2022. 90% of employees said they were a good fit with the Veritiv culture and the way we do things. 88% percent said they have confidence in our company strategy and leadership. Both were 3-point increases over 2022.

Employees note time and time again that the community at Veritiv and the people they work with are the primary reason for staying at the organization. Our People Commitment is a strong motivator for employee satisfaction and ensuring employees feel empowered and comfortable with their team. Still, the relationships the employees form independently drastically impact our workplace environment and motivate them to continue their careers for years.
As a company, we foster frequent, engaging communication via our internal communications platform, Vibe, to connect our locations around the world and make the company feel like a community where diverse perspectives are met with enthusiasm. We conduct an annual Employee Engagement Survey and an annual Internal Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey. Managers and leaders are required to create specific action plans with their teams as a result of these surveys. Our monthly All Employee Webcasts are also an open forum for all employees to ask questions of our CEO and other senior leaders. We also now have four Employee Resource Groups (Women, African-American, LBGTQ+, and Hispanic/Latin) aimed at giving a voice to underrepresented groups across the organization.
In 2022, we brought together our 600 people leaders in person to collaborate on how to improve the Employee Experience and the Customer Experience and to develop action plans across the organization. Key was providing a forum where they could share their perspectives from their part of the organization.

WE SUPPORT OUR EMPLOYEES IN ACHIEVING THEIR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL GOALS BY …

Through our company’s virtual education system, Veritiv Knowledge Systems (VKS), employees can access instructor-led training modules that center around critical topics such as individual development, communication skills, goal setting, inclusive leadership and more. Moreover, employees set personal written goals each year and review with their managers to cultivate career advancements and foster growth. During periods of transition into new initiatives, Veritiv’s Global Learning and Development team designs hands-on training with trainers for affected employees to learn new responsibilities. Our recently launched Career Hub provides an online tool for employees to track skills and development requirements for them to reach their desired positions. There are also frequent professional development “Lunch and Learn” opportunities with Talent Management. Employees have the opportunity to discuss and learn important career skills, such as giving constructive feedback. Veritiv also offers a formal Mentorship program where employees meet regularly to discuss career paths with company mentors.
The Veritiv Driver Development Program provides employees who are interested in becoming a Class A commercial driver with the necessary education. Employees will also do all training during work hours and be compensated while they learn. To be eligible, the individual must be employed by Veritiv for at least 12 months, be endorsed by a manager, be in good standing, and meet DOT requirements.

Our CEO and Leadership team believe strongly in the Simon Sinek perspective that “Customers will never love a company until employees love it first.” They have spent the past two years gathering feedback and focused on improving the Employee Experience. They have done this by listening to employees through a number of channels and acting on what employees want our culture to be. The result has been a highly-engaged workforce – 91% of employees completed the Employee Engagement survey. The results were an engagement score of 85, and metrics that surpassed the previous year and versus industry benchmarks across all 12 survey categories.

CEO Strengths

OUR CEO SERVES AS A MODEL OF OUR COMPANY VALUES BY …

Our CEO Sal Abbate demonstrates excellent intuition for the key elements of change to positively impact the employee experience. He set out to better understand from employees at all levels what they liked about the culture, what they didn’t, and what they wanted to see changed. The result was more than 600 employees from across North America participating in a series of small-group, live video roundtable sessions with Sal and other senior leaders. Feedback was transformed into action plans implemented over the past two years. From simple things like “Dress for Your Day” to the more complex new profit sharing for 5,500 employees who were not previously eligible for a bonus, Sal uses all tools at his discretion to meaningfully boost morale.
Sal’s “Listening Tour,” set the tone among employees for his open, collaborative, and approachable leadership style. Sal makes time to talk to many employees, including regular site visits to our numerous office and warehouse locations. He leads monthly, live All Employee Webcasts as a forum to answer questions and hear suggestions employees have about the business, company news and other initiatives.
Sal initiated Veritiv’s first All Employee Survey in 2022. In the comments, employees expressed overwhelming optimism and pride about the direction Veritiv is moving under Sal’s leadership. They appreciate his transparent communication and his consistent commitment to positive change.
