Our CEO Sal Abbate demonstrates excellent intuition for the key elements of change to positively impact the employee experience. He set out to better understand from employees at all levels what they liked about the culture, what they didn’t, and what they wanted to see changed. The result was more than 600 employees from across North America participating in a series of small-group, live video roundtable sessions with Sal and other senior leaders. Feedback was transformed into action plans implemented over the past three years. From simple things like “Dress for Your Day” to the more complex new profit sharing for 4,700 employees who were not previously eligible for a bonus, Sal uses all tools at his discretion to meaningfully boost morale.
Sal’s “Listening Tour,” set the tone among employees for his open, collaborative, and approachable leadership style. Sal makes time to talk to many employees, including regular site visits to our numerous office and warehouse locations. He leads monthly, live All Employee Webcasts as a forum to answer questions and hear suggestions employees have about the business, company news and other initiatives.
Sal initiated Veritiv’s first All Employee Survey in 2022. In the comments in the 2023 survey, employees expressed overwhelming optimism and pride about the direction Veritiv is moving under Sal’s leadership. They appreciate his transparent communication and his consistent commitment to positive change.
