working together to solve some of the most serious and most challenging diseases. Vertexians see the impossible as a starting point. We tackle the toughest scientific challenges and take on smart risks to change the lives of people with serious diseases.
This is only possible with an inclusive, equitable and diverse culture where all voices are represented; where all ideas are heard and debated; where every person at Vertex feels seen and celebrated; and where everyone can be their authentic selves, have a sense of belonging and do their best work.
we have an insatiable curiosity. We know innovation drives results – and we are constantly seeking to out-innovate ourselves. And, we ALWAYS do the right thing – doing whatever it takes to support our employees and our patients. We keep our purpose mission in mind and make decisions and investments in service of that mission – with the highest integrity and ethics, inclusion and belonging.
ensuring belonging. Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (ID&E) are core to Vertex’s ability to create and deliver transformative medicines. Our formal efforts began in 2014 with the opening of our first Learning Lab and our support of STEAM education in the community. Soon after, we launched our Employee Resource Networks (ERNs), which strengthen community and belonging within Vertex, provide employees with access to mentors and professional development, and amplify the voices, and experiences of traditionally underrepresented groups. We have four ERNs:
BRAVE, recognizes the veteran and first responder community, IWILL (Inspiring Women in Leadership and Learning) seeks to strengthen Vertex’s efforts in attracting, retaining, and enhancing the career satisfaction of women and contributing to their professional advancement, VIBE (Vertex Includes Boundless Ethnicities) supports the empowerment and growth of our racially and ethnically diverse employees as leaders, building a diverse community based on trust and respect; and Vertex PRIDE, supports, provides visibility of and celebrates our LGBTQ+ employees and allies.
always pushing for career growth and development. Developing transformative medicines for patients requires the brightest minds doing their best work. We provide numerous career development programs to encourage growth and advancement:
•Career Hub: a job matching algorithm and level-specific competency assessments provide a toolbox for employees to drive their path at the company.
•Global Mentoring Program: allows every Vertexian the opportunity to be matched with a mentor to help navigate professional growth and progression.
•VOICE program: an internal, global innovation tournament established to empower employees to propose “game-changing” solutions to our critical science and business challenges.
it’s not just about what we do, but how we do it. We have an Uncompromising Commitment to Patients. We never forget that patients are at the center of everything we do. Innovation Is Our Lifeblood. We innovate in all aspects of our business. We challenge the status quo. We have a fearless Pursuit of Excellence which means we’re courageous and take calculated risks. And, we have a “We Wins” mentality. We create outstanding diverse and inclusive teams to make the best decisions for the enterprise.
our annual Global Day of Service in which every employee at Vertex is encouraged to give back by participating in a hands on global service project, the reverse mentoring program through PRIDE which allows executives to be matched with PRIDE members; and our Global Matching Gift Program in which the Vertex Foundation matches dollars employees donate to the non-profit organizations of their choice.
leading by example. She lives our values every day and sets clear, measurable goals for accountability and progress. She continuously looks for ways to build on our values and evolve our work. She developed criteria that define what success looks like for Vertex in the year 2030. We call it VX-2030 – it has three shared goals:
Completing the CF journey, Repeating our success in multiple diseases, and
Building and scaling our company, while sustaining our unique culture.
By carving out visions such as the Big 3, all Vertexians can focus on the same initiatives and work together to achieve these goals.
401(k) matching, the ability to purchase Vertex stock at a discount, and financial counseling; our tuition reimbursement and repayment program; at least 4 weeks paid time off for everyone at the start, 2 week-long companywide shutdowns per year; generous parental and caregiver leave; back-up childcare and adult care, daycare tuition discounts, pet insurance; family planning supports like reimbursement for surrogacy and adoption fees, reciprocal IVP, and egg cryopreservation; and most importantly mental health resources including on-demand support, a guided meditation app, and online wellness assessments.
We are committed to adapting our benefits to meet the changing needs of our employees wherever they live and work. Nothing has been more exemplary of our team effort than the challenges brought on by COVID. We added new benefits to help employees take care of themselves, their loved ones and each other.
Those benefits include:
Added additional company-wide synchronous time off
Launched several mental health and wellness initiatives
A stipend to set up home offices
Complimentary commuting and breakfasts to make getting to and being on-site easier
