Waracle people collaborate across the company through our Communities of Practice and through invitations to speak at our “Brown Bags” and smaller events. We work in an agile manner, so everyone is heard daily at our sprint stand ups. Our Communities of Practice mean that regardless of the project you might be working on, you’ll still have time to meet with and speak to other developers from the same skill set working across the company. Our recent iOS community WWDC keynote event organised by our iOS Practice Consultant is one great example of this type of collaborative get together.
Waracle’s vision is shared widely with our people through our monthly hangouts led by the CEO and at monthly project and team meetings led by our Executive Team. Our Software Engineering Managers, (who line manage all of the developers across Waracle), are engaged in workshops involving them directly in our values, our mission and our vision. They have the chance to effect the way in which we all reflect the values, the mission and the vision and weave them throughout the business. This people led approach is key to ensuring our vision is shared.
Our Leadership team continually strives to be accessible to our employees to listen to their ideas and thoughts and to ensure that all levels of the business are reached. We also have feedback mechanisms utilising our Waracle built “Slack Bots” for those who perhaps don’t want to speak up, or want to make a suggestion anonymously. Our Culture Committee is a group of employees representing every area and level of the business; it’s an employee led initiative which ensures a culture of trust and respect and allows us to talk honestly to one another, to share ideas, suggest events and to innovate.
Waracle takes the time to understand an individual beyond just their job title and is keen to capture excellence by offering the opportunity for movement, growth and variety within the business. We have a robust reporting system and strong team of Software Engineering Managers (SEMs), who continually strive to do the very best for their people. Our SEMs are our career champions, meeting individuals regularly to ensure support is always available and the future always considered. Additionally, we’ve partnered with UDEMY to offer every staff member an opportunity to upskill autonomously or follow tailored courses for specific roles.
Waracle’s company values have been crafted utilising both the latest engagement survey results from our people and a number of in person group workshops agreeing both the content and the way in which we want to weave these values into the business. The values are important to us as they’ve been defined by our people and truly reflect how we “live” a Waracle life and aspire to constantly improve. Our values are just as important to us as our mission and vision for the future; not simply words on a page, but guiding principles to live by.
Waracle cares. We ultimately respect that people have lives outside of the workplace and we’re keen to support those lives. Our People & Culture team work hard to ensure our various initiatives value successes, support difficulties and celebrate good news. This list is not exhaustive, but some of these initiatives include; KUDOS – Sharing praise, Waracle TV – Sharing our community, Caring in tough moments (e.g. flowers for condolences), Caring in celebratory moments (e.g. new baby gifts), “Spirit of Waracle” charitable giving to charities selected by our employees, Freedom to work flexibly and take time out for sport’s day, for appointments etc.
Chris Martin is a driving force behind Waracle’s culture and values. Since joining Waracle Chris has always taken the time to be visible and interact with any and all employees. He is both approachable and personable. This makes his fantastic beliefs around work/life balance resonate across the entire workplace while he takes the time to truly understand and invest in the people of Waracle. Waracle couldn’t have a better CEO for this period of fast growth and fast change; he keeps very cool in the face of uncertainty.
