A Career, Not Just a Job: How Mohegan Develops Casino and Hospitality Talent
Mohegan Sun careers start with a math problem the company can’t solve with money. In southeastern Connecticut, Mohegan competes for the same workers as regional employers with far bigger payrolls, some of them hiring by the thousands. A hospitality and gaming company is not going to win that bidding war on wages alone. Mohegan’s people team knows it, and says so plainly.
So it made a different bet. If you can’t out-pay the biggest employers in your region, out-develop them. Give a table games dealer a path to running a pit. Give a hotel front-desk agent a path to leading a department. Make the offer “a career, not just a job” (the exact phrase Mohegan’s people leaders use internally) and build an emotional connection to the brand that a signing bonus can’t touch.
That’s the theory. Here’s the evidence.
Does Mohegan Sun offer career growth?
Yes. Mohegan Sun supports career growth through a leadership development suite with six distinct programs, an employee-voice program that has produced 550+ workplace improvements, and internal paths long enough that 800+ Day One employees are still on the team, averaging roughly 23 years. In a 2026 survey, 740 of 1,018 employees had five or more years of tenure.
Those numbers come from the 2026 Love of Workplace Index survey Best Practice Institute ran at Mohegan: 1,018 Team Members, most of them in guest-facing operational roles, on the record about what working there is actually like. We’ll get to what they said. First, the competitive picture that makes development the whole strategy.
The Bet: Out-Develop What You Can't Out-Pay
Casino careers have a reputation problem that has nothing to do with casinos. Candidates hear “hospitality” and assume a ceiling: shift work, tipped wages, a job you take until something better comes along. The industry’s own turnover statistics haven’t helped the argument.
Mohegan’s counter-argument is structural rather than rhetorical. In late 2025 the company went through a publicly announced leadership transition, including the departure of its long-serving president and CEO after roughly 25 years with the organization; in May 2026 it named Kelly Williams as SVP & Chief People Officer. The strategic emphasis that came with the new people leadership is telling: less talk of expansion, more investment in leadership training, talent development, and retention. When a company reorganizes its people function around developing the workforce it already has, that’s a signal about where it thinks its competitive edge lives.
The cultural raw material was already there. Mohegan doesn’t call its workforce “staff” or “headcount.” Everyone is a Team Member, and every interaction is framed by the Spirit of Aquai, the Mohegan Tribe’s philosophy of welcome, mutual respect, and cooperation. That sounds like brand language until you notice it shows up unprompted in employee survey responses about core values being “practiced,” not posted on a wall. More on that below.
And there’s a practical reason the development bet suits this business. A casino resort is a vertical city. Gaming floor, hotel, restaurants, retail, entertainment venues, security, finance, IT, marketing: all under one roof, all needing supervisors and managers who understand the floor. The person best positioned to run a department at Mohegan Sun is usually someone who worked in it. Internal development is how the operation staffs itself.
The Development Machinery
Talent development at Mohegan runs on a few named, specific programs rather than a vague promise of advancement. Four pieces matter most.
A six-program leadership development suite. Mohegan’s leadership development program is built as six distinct programs, tiered for where a Team Member is in their career rather than one generic management course. For a workforce where 347 of 1,018 survey respondents identified as front line and 227 as managers of others, that tiering is the point: the dealer eyeing a supervisor role and the director preparing for an executive seat need different training, and they get it.
“You Said It, We Did It.” This is the employee-voice program built directly from engagement survey feedback, and it’s the one with the scoreboard: more than 550 workplace improvements delivered at a single property because employees asked for them. Why does a feedback program belong in an article about career growth? Because development dies in organizations where speaking up goes nowhere. A visible loop between “I said it” and “they did it” is the precondition for employees telling managers what they want next, including what they want to become.
The Loop. Mohegan’s enterprise-wide digital workplace, which connects Team Members across a business that spans a resort’s worth of departments. In a company this operationally diverse, knowing what jobs exist two buildings over is half the battle of internal mobility.
Recognition tied to culture. Survey respondents brought this up on their own — one described the everyday support that makes the culture work: great people, constant communication across the company, recognition both verbal and monetary, and ready backup from HR and IT when they need it.
That’s a Team Member listing, in their own shorthand, the everyday infrastructure of a workplace that develops people: communication, recognition in both words and money, and support functions that actually answer.
One honest caveat, because the survey demands it. Growth and development drew 106 mentions when employees described what they love about Mohegan, and 98 mentions when they described what they’d improve. Employees value the development on offer and want more of it. For a candidate, that dual signal is arguably better news than a perfect score would be: it describes a workforce ambitious enough to keep asking, at a company they’ve decided is worth asking.
What 1,018 Employees Say About Growing Here
Survey data on career growth in hospitality usually comes from anonymous review sites with self-selected samples. This is different: 1,018 Mohegan Team Members surveyed in early 2026, with customer service as the largest named job function. The voice of this data is the gaming floor and the hotel desk, not the head office.
Growth and development registered 106 mentions among the things employees love about working at Mohegan. The verbatim responses show what that looks like in an actual sentence:
“Benefits, opportunities for personal & career growth and positive work environment in which our core values are practiced.”
“Dynamic, fast paced environment, great team culture and strong growth opportunities”
Notice what both quotes do: neither treats growth as a standalone perk. It arrives bundled with culture, values, and team, which is exactly the “emotional connection to the brand” Mohegan is betting it can offer where bigger payrolls can’t.
The scored data points the same direction. Team Members rated “love working for this company” at 83.1 out of 100, and the survey’s overall sentiment split was 815 positive responses against 22 negative. The single most common emotion coded in the open text was gratitude, at 453 responses.
Tenure Is the Proof
You can claim to develop people. Tenure is what happens when it’s true.
Of the 1,018 Team Members surveyed, 740 have been at Mohegan five years or more. Another 116 are at three to five years. That’s over 84% of the surveyed workforce past the point where hospitality employees typically churn out.
Then there’s the number that should stop a skeptical candidate mid-scroll: more than 800 Day One employees — people who were there when Mohegan Sun opened in 1996 — are still on the team, with an average tenure of roughly 23 years.
Nobody stays at a dead-end job for 23 years. Not in a regional labor market with this many alternatives. A 23-year average tenure among a group of 800+ is what a career looks like from the outside: someone who started at an opening-day post and grew, role by role, into whatever they hold now. Mohegan’s development story isn’t a program brochure. It’s walking around the property wearing a Day One badge.
Benefits Built for People Who Stay
A 23-year career requires more than a promotion ladder. It requires benefits designed for someone’s whole working life, and this is where Mohegan’s employee scores get specific.
In the 2026 survey, Team Members rated health insurance at 83.1 out of 100 and paid time off at 79.7, with dental at 76.7 close behind. Those are the scored items. The unscored details are the ones employees volunteer without being asked:
“Affordability of health care benefits. On site pharmacy. Provided lunch each day.”
Read that quote again as a hospitality worker. An on-site pharmacy means filling a prescription without burning a day off. A provided daily lunch is a real, recurring line item handed back to every Team Member on every shift. And the Eagleview employee center gives the workforce a dedicated space of its own inside a property built for guests.
None of this is the flashiest benefits package in America, and Mohegan’s own survey shows employees asking for more on compensation; benefits topped both the “what we love” and “what to improve” lists. But the pattern fits the thesis of this whole piece. These are stay benefits, not sign-on benefits. A pharmacy on site, affordable healthcare, daily lunch: the value compounds the longer you’re there, which is precisely the shape of an employer built around long careers.
